The 10 Most Expensive Weddings of All Time

The average American wedding costs about $30,000. Imagine being able to spend that much just on the shoes you wear to the reception! The most expensive weddings to date spared no expense when it came to their nuptials. They overindulged on things such as flowers, lavish dinners, gowns and entertainment. Below is a Top Ten list of the most expensive weddings ever recorded. Though the parties involved didn’t mind spending those large sums of cash, some of them ended up costing even more money because the marriage didn’t last and resulted in an even pricier divorce settlement.


10. Elizabeth Hurley & Arun Nayer

The Bride: Movie Star and Supermodel

The Groom: Textile Heir

The Ceremony: An eight day celebration that began at the Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, Britain and ended at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India. The bride was given away by Sir Elton John and some of her guests included Donatella Versace, and Evelyn Lauder. They paid $300,000 for private jets and over $100,000 for accommodations, including the $10,000-a-night bridal suite in India.

9. Heather Mills & Paul McCartney

The Bride: PETA activist and former model

The Groom: A member of The Beatles

The Ceremony: An Indian themed wedding at St. Salvador’s church in Monaghan, Ireland. 300 guests celebrated with couple in a castle that was rented for $40,000 and decorated with $145,000 worth of flowers and $150,000 worth of fireworks. The couple spent their wedding night on a $20 million yacht. Unfortunately all of this extravagance did not pay off in the end, the couple divorced after six years and McCartney had to pay Mills $50 million dollars!

8. Liza Minnelli & David Gest

The Bride: Iconic Pop Star

The Groom: Music producer

The Ceremony: About 500 service staff were hired to serve the 850 guests that featured best man Michael Jackson and maid of honor Elizabeth Taylor. Their entertainment consisted of a 60-piece orchestra, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, and Natalie Cole. The couple reportedly spent $700,000 for flowers and $40, 000 for their 6-foot, 12-tier wedding cake. Sadly, their nuptial did not last more than a year and the divorce made the front pages of tabloid magazines when allegations of assault, drunken rages and exposure to a sexually transmitted disease were made.

7. Chelsea Clinton & Marc Mezvinsky

The Bride: Daughter of President Bill Clinton

The Groom: Investment banker

The Ceremony: The couple, who were childhood friends, had a lavish wedding that included an $11,000 cake, $600,000 air-conditioned tents and a Vera Wang wedding gown. Much of their expenses were spent on security for their 500 guests that included Oprah.

6. Delphine Arnault & Alessandro Vallarino Gancia

The Bride: Daughter of LVMH founder Bernard Arnault

The Groom: Heir to Gancia, an Italian dynasty of wines

The Ceremony: Harper’s Bazaar named this lavish wedding 2005’s wedding of the year. The ceremony was held in France at the Cote d’Azur and was decorated with 5,000 white roses. Her dress was designed by John Galliano for Dior and some of the famous wedding guests included Elizabeth Hurley and Karl Lagerfeld

5. Colleen McLaughlin & Wayne Rooney

The Bride: Television presenter and product endorser

The Groom: Manchester United/England soccer star

The Ceremony: The couple, who have been dating since they were teens, had private jets fly in 65 guests to their 24 hour masquerade celebration that took place on a $120 million yacht. Some of the bride’s luxe items included her $3 million dress that was designed by Georgia Chapman’s Marchesa label with crystals, pearls and a 25-foot train. She also had her favorite pop group Westlife, give the couple and their guests an exclusive performance at a cost of $400,000.

The Bride: Model, actress and former investment banker

The Groom: Hotelier and actor

The Ceremony: 600 guests from 26 different countries were flown in on chartered jets for the couple’s lavish 10 day celebration. Celebrations took place in three Indian cities Mumbai, Udaipur, and Delhi. Guests included Bill Clinton, Naomi Campbell, and P. Diddy.

3. Aleksandra Nikolic Melnichenko & Andrey Melnichenko

The Bride: Serbian model

The Groom: Russian billionaire and founder of MDM Bank

The Ceremony: The couple tied the knot at the Cote D’Azur in France. Rumors circulated that the billionaire had a church dismantled, shipped and rebuilt in France for this extravagant ceremony. There were performances by Whitney Houston, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias and Christina Aguilera who were all flown to Cannes on a private jet and given an estimated $3.6 million each to perform.

2. Vanisha Mittal & Amit Bhatia

The Bride: Daughter of billionaire steel-magnate Lakshmi Mittal, the richest man in India.

The Groom: Investment banker and owner of Swordfish Investments

The Ceremony: This nuptial earned a place in the Forbes list of “Billionaire Weddings.” The couple starred in a specially written full-scale Bollywood musical version of their early relationship and had Kylie Minogue as one of their many performers. Invitations were a 20 page silver book that included plane tickets and rooms at a five-star Paris hotel. Their 1,000 guests were served 100 different dishes prepared by a top Calcutta chef and drank up a wine tab of $1.5 million

The Groom: The current leader of Dubai

The Ceremony: This wedding has been mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most expensive wedding ever recorded. An amphitheater was built specifically for the 7 day event and was large enough to accommodate their 20,000 guests. 50 Arab and African song-and-dance troupes paraded before the princes, emirs, sheiks and ambassadors who had been flown in on 34 private jets. One of the performer’s who sang a song that was specially written for the couple was awarded a bright red 1981 Mercedes. Bride Salama followed a strict Bedouin tradition and spent the duration of her week long wedding celebration, cloistered in her room.

    That’s true, Yumma. The Sheikh of Dubai never married such Princess Salama.His first wife was Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, whom he married in 1979, and his second wife was Princess Haya bint Al-Hussein of Jordan, whom he married in 2004. The groom is the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
